This past Wednesday was Horn’s Third Annual International Night! We had over fifty families presenting, with over 25 countries around the world represented! Students and families that were not presenting picked up passports and were able to travel the globe, sample food, play with toys, try on clothing, get henna tattoos and most importantly talk and learn about new places along the way! This year we had a very special treat with David Greene playing Irish music in the library on his hammered dulcimer! The event culminates with a fashion show in the gym followed by a raffle drawing where attendees have the chance at winning one of four American apple pies from Wilson’s Orchard. The PTO spends $300 on supplies for this event each year.

Some schools sell wrapping paper or chocolate bars to support their school. We aren’t asking you to do that. Instead, we ask you to consider a donation. Parents did you hear about the Hampster Wheel and other fun events at the Horn Olympics this past Friday? The kids had a lot of fun in their cross grade teams building Horn spirit. We have LOTS of photos and even a few videos to share about the day below.
Thank you to Mr. Proctor and Mrs. Smock for organizing a great Horn Olympics event this year. Also, a special thank you to all that came to volunteer. The kids had so much fun, despite the chilly, windy temps:
Becky Lyons, Manya Song, Jennifer Logsdon, Janis Deyak, Cecilia Norris, Michelle Moore, Mick Behm, Ludmila Scott, Asih Asikin-Garmager, Maria Spyker, Pam Nims, Merrie-Anne Casko, Dave Casko, Laura Broffitt, Peter Abbott, Paul Rost, Maria Cahalan, Jen Kruse, Salina McCarty, Meredith Gall, Dawn Worrell O’Leary, Ryan O’Leary, Francine Rath, Tessa King, Ling Jiang, Lamia Khowessah, Julie VanDyke and all others that may have shown up to help out!
Also check out the great Olympic medal treats for our Horn staff from our PTO Hospitality team in the photos below. The PTO funded the purchase of bracelets for every child with the spirit day moto. Ask your student to show you theirs.

Hi Parents -
There is a new website for teachers, parents and others that is to explain Iowa standards broken down by grade level: www.iowacore.gov. It was posted in the Virtual Backpack section of our school’s website this month: http://www.edline.net/files/_5QJMF_/3980dd0b77ac9cbc3745a49013852ec4/Iowa_Core_Website_Letter_to_Parents.pdf
At the bottom of the website (scroll to bottom and in the right hand column) there is a link to “Iowa Core Parent Guides”. This takes you to a listing of grade by grade summary sheets which help show you what your child will be learning during their school year. While these sheets are high level, I still found them a useful starting point.
This website may be of use to you as parent teacher conferences begin at the end of the month.

The Johnson County Disproportionate Minority Contact Committee is holding a community forum and would like to hear from you! Community leaders, peace officers and school administrators will be present to answer questions and help facilitate ideas about how we can work together to eradicate the racial disparities that are present in many of our Johnson County youth serving systems. Your voice is beneficial whether you are seeing things that are positive or that need work–the more input the better our community’s needs can be met. This event is free and open to the public!

The Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) recently funded the kindergarten field trip to Wilson’s apple orchard in September. The kids took three buses to Wilson’s where they learned about different apple varieties, taste tested apples, read stories, took a tractor ride and enjoyed the beautiful day! The PTO provided $350 to cover the expenses of the field trip. Below are lots of pictures of the kids enjoying their day as well as thank you cards from the kindergarten rooms.
Thank you parents for supporting our school to make enrichment opportunities like this available to our students!
