Horn 6th Grade Student Headed to State Geography Bee!

Geo-Bee_2015-2Fellow Hornets – help us cheer on Nathan Deyak as he heads to the state level National Geographic Bee at the University of Northern Iowa!  Go Nathan!

The state level National Geographic Bee is held tomorrow, Friday March 27th at UNI.  State champions will advance to a National Bee competition held in Washington D.C.

Students are selected through a series of geography bee tests administered at Horn. The first exams, taken in the fall, determine which students will participate in the Horn level Geographic Bee, in which Nathan was the winner.  Nathan then qualified for the state level Bee through his performance on an additional written exam.

From the National Geographic Bee letters:

How would you fare as a Bee contestant?

At the school Bees this year, students had to answer such questions as:

  1. Six-time Super Bowl champions, the Pittsburgh Steelers, play football near the source of the Ohio River in which state—Alabama or Pennsylvania?
  2. Balboa Park, with more than ten museums, performing arts centers, and gardens, is located in which southern California city?
  3. Taylor Swift performed songs from her album Red last summer in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of which Asian country that borders the South China Sea?
  4. Disney’s blockbuster movie Frozen is set in the fictional land of Arendelle, which was largely inspired by the country of Norway. Norway is located on which European peninsula?

* Scroll down for the answers!

1. Pennsylvania

2. San Diego

3. Malaysia

4. Scandinavian Peninsula

3rd Grade Trip to Englert – Thank You!

The Third Grade enjoyed their field trip to the Englert Theatre on March 11th to see the Nile Project! Amazing performers from 11 different countries along the Nile River entertained us and invited us to dance. They spoke different languages from their home countries, shared about their various instruments and how they came together as a group to make their music. This experience tied in nicely with many of our recent Social Studies units. Thank you to the PTO for sponsoring this incredible musical opportunity for our students!

Mrs. Neveln, Mrs. Campbell, and Mr. Proctor

Thank you Horn parents for sponsoring the Horn third grade trip to see The Nile Project this week.  Horn PTO Spent ~$100 for the event.  We appreciate everyone’s support during our fund raisers which allow us to cover the expenses for opportunities such as this one. More photos are below THANK YOU! Read the rest of this entry »

Spring Track Club Begins April 1st – No Joke :)

winged_shoeSpring Track Club is Near! Warm weather is coming and Spring Track Club is almost here! Bring the whole family and lace up your running (or walking) shoes to have fun, get active and interact with other Horn families. Track Club is set to begin April 1st and run through April 29th, meeting on Wednesdays from 6-7pm each week. Spring can bring hazardous weather—watch your email for cancels if the forecast is questionable. As a reminder, this is not a drop-off activity—all children should be accompanied by a supervising adult. We had a fantastic turnout throughout Fall Track Club—we hope to see those familiar faces and some new ones as well! If you have any questions get in touch with the Horn PTO, Mr. Josh Hildebrand or Ms. Sara Cummins.

New Books in Horn Library – THANK YOU!

IMG_0433Check out the new books in our Horn library, part of the outcome from our Fall Scholastic Book Fair! Thank you parents for all your support. Did you know each and every one of you are part of our Horn PTO automatically? We received this very nice email from our librarian and wanted to share this out to each of you as members of our PTO.

Dear Horn PTO,

Thank you for the time and energy involved in this past Scholastic Book Fair.  The profited amount was the highest I remember you have earned.  We received the books yesterday and got those we could out to the kids today.  Three third-graders stood in line this morning to wait while we got the Minecraft books ready to go!  They were so excited!

I focused this year’s profits primarily on nonfiction books for kindergarten-4th grade, an area that we needed beefing up AND one that students have requested (I.e. ‘Mrs. DePrenger, do we have any books on guinea pigs for pets?’).  Some older students requested the Amulet books and I have had an interest in Greek Mythology so bought those, too.

Thanks for your continued support of the Horn Library.

Help invite J.K. Rowling to Iowa City!

JK+Rowling+Invite_Edline+SizeThe University of Iowa Lecture Committee has proposed an exciting prospect: bringing J. K. Rowling to the U of I campus in the spring of 2016. They have an open call for letters for their letter-writing campaign, and have invited our school community—students, staff, parents—to join in by writing personal letters to Rowling, inviting, urging her to come to Iowa City.

They have suggested that the letters include two elements:
• Thanks. How her work has been enjoyed & affected your life
• Invitation. Beg… plead!  Invite her to lovely Iowa in 2016.

We are encouraging all Hornets (students, staff, and parents) to participate and help provide letters.

The U of I committee would like to send all letters as a consolidated bundle.  The letters should be on paper—either handwritten or printed out—then collected and sent to your school librarian by Thursday, March 12. Or mailed in directly to:
University Lecture Committee
ATTN: J.K. Rowling Invitations
