Goal! PTO purchases Soccer Nets for the Lower Playground

20140915 328This school year, the lower playground has a new addition – soccer goal nets! The nets were purchased by the Horn PTO at an expense of $1500 dollars. The soccer nets are used daily by kids during recess time and have been a well used and fun addition to the Horn school yard.  We have photos of the nets and kids in action below.

Thank you parents for your support to make purchases like this happen!  These nets are just one of many ways the PTO funds the school for items not covered by the district.  Our fall envelope drive is underway now. Read the rest of this entry »

Horn Chess Club to Begin on October 7th

kids chessHorn Chess Club will start back up on October 7th!  This year, the club will meet on Tuesday mornings from 7:45 – 8:30 am in the Horn art room. There are no fees to participate and registration is not necessary – simply show up and play chess with other Horn students.  No prior chess experience is required – students at all skill levels are welcome to join.

We would like to especially thank our Horn band teacher, Mr. Lee Rabe, for sponsoring this fantastic club – THANK YOU!

Public Input Meeting on Willow Creek Park & Kiwanis Park – September 18th

Horn Parents -

The City of Iowa City just announced it will be hosting a public input meeting at 6 pm on Thursday September 18th at the Willow Creek Park Shelter to discuss improvements to both Willow Creek and Kiwanis parks and gain community feedback.  Please visit the following IC news post about the meeting and the topics covered:    There is also contact information to provide feedback and comments to parks and recreation if you are unable to attend the meeting.  This is a great opportunity to provide your input to our local community parks that surround Horn school! Notice of Changes to Horn PTO Bylaws

On Tuesday, September 2nd, the PTO Executive Board voted to amend the Bylaws of the PTO.  Changes were made to the Bylaws to bring them up to date with current practices and use of technology, as well as to prepare for the PTO to apply for 501c3 (nonprofit) status with the IRS.  Parents can read the amended Bylaws here: ByLaws_8.26.14.pdf.  In addition, a paper copy of the amended Bylaws will be available in the Horn office.

Horn Sweatshirts Available in the Online Spirit Store


Just in time for our cold weather – we now have Horn sweatshirts available for order through our online Horn spirit store!   We have both hooded and crew neck sweatshirts available in addition to the Horn t-shirts. When ordering shirts please make sure to add a delivery option to your cart so we know how to deliver your spirit wear to you (we do not ship items).

Sweatshirts will be ordered in bulk, so they will NOT be available for immediate delivery.

Run For The Schools October 19th – Volunteers and Runners Needed!

RunForTheSchools_2014Mark your calendars for this year’s largest Iowa City Community District Foundation fundraiser, Run For the Schools (! Attached below is a downloadable entry form for registering rather than signing up online.  Early registration and family special discounts end October 3rd, and then registration fees go up again on October 18th so sign up early!.

Don’t like to run but would like to help?  Volunteers are also needed for BOTH Saturday and Sunday (October 18th and 19th) to make this fundraiser happen. Make sure to designate Horn as your school when volunteering so it can count towards Horn’s participation numbers.  Sign up to help out with the event here:

There is a competition between schools for the largest participation by families and students.  Participation is counted by registering for the day’s event OR volunteering.  Last year, Horn school placed 3rd – can we make it to #1 this year?  Schools with the largest participation receive trophies additional school funding.

Here is the important Info about the Day:

  • 8 am – 1/2 mile fun run
  • 8:15 am – 1 mile race
  • 8:30 am – Horn Picture at College Green Park Playground
  • 9 am – 5k/ 10k/ Half-marathon

Call for Magnet School Task Force Committee Volunteers

raise-hands-volunteerThe Iowa City Community School District is recruiting volunteers to serve on the Magnet School Task Force. The purpose of the group will be to study the magnet school model and feasibility of implementation.    The group will meet approximately two times a month in the evening beginning in October and ending in April.  A report will be presented to the Board of Education in the spring of 2015.  Interested individuals should contact Assistant Superintendent Becky Furlong, by September 22.

Dine Out For Education

September 18th is a Iowa City School Disctrict Foundation fundraiser: Dine Out for Education!  Visit their website for more information, below is an exerpt.  Such an easy way to support all schools in our Iowa City Area!

Join us on September 18, 2014 for the ICCSD Foundation’s fall Food for Thought: Dine Out for Education event .  All you have to do is dine out at one (or more!) of our 34 participating restaurants and businesses on September 18 and they will donate 10% of daily sales to the Foundation’s Excellence Fund.  The Excellence Fund supports ICCSD school programs such as School of the Wild, Symphony Goes to School, Visiting Author, STEM initiatives, as well as critical classroom grants.  New this fall are the addition of some dessert options to top off your Dine Out meal!”

See Great Family Shows and Raise Money for Horn School!


The Horn PTO is participating in a wonderful fundraiser sponsored by the Coralville Performing Arts Center (CCPA).  When you purchase tickets for family friendly CCPA events through our Horn links, a portion of ticket sales will come back to our school.  It’s a win-win! You’ll experience great live entertainment, and a portion of your ticket price will be donated to the Horn Elementary PTO.

Here’s how easy it is:
