Dear Horn Parents -
Please take a moment to read the following statement from our Iowa City District Parent Organization regarding the state of funding for education in Iowa. This is a critical topic, and one that we need every parent’s advocacy on.
The DPO encourages all PTOs, PTAs and PSTOs to advocate for adequate and timely funding for our public schools. Please share this information with parents and teachers at your respective schools.
The governor of Iowa is recommending a General Fund appropriation of 1.25 percent, which we believe is inadequate. Iowa’s economy ranks 9th in the nation in reserve funds on hand. Our state is ranked 35th in the nation in per-pupil funding. Iowa’s percent change in spending per student, inflation-adjusted, from FY 2008 through FY 2014, is down $641 per student. Iowa’s relative investment in students has fallen steadily since 2001-02.
What can you do?
- Become familiar with the issues. Several documents are attached.
- Email state legislators. Email addresses appear at the bottom of this document, as well as some suggested text for a message. Send your message to the entire delegation; just copy and paste the email header.
- Consider traveling to Des Moines on Feb. 17 for “Day at the Capitol.” Join representatives from the ICCSD to share the district’s legislative priorities with lawmakers. More details to come.

Winter Carnival is approaching (February 7th!), and that means it’s time for the Cake Walk. You can sign up to donate a Cake here: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0544aea622a13-winter
Both homemade and store bought cakes are welcome
What’s a Cake Walk, you may ask?
Good question! People of all ages form a circle, each standing beside a number. When the music starts, everyone walks around the circle. When the music stops, each person stops beside a new number. A number is drawn, and the lucky person standing at that number wins–A CAKE! The winner gets to pick out a cake, and we even offer Cake Storage until the end of the Carnival, so no one has to carry a cake around for the rest of the evening.
We need LOTS of cakes to run the Cake Walk–each Horn family should try to donate a cake. Too busy to bake, or not into cake decorating? No problem–store-bought cakes, cupcakes, and simple homemade cakes or cupcakes are just as welcome!
Feeling creative? Kids and families can choose to enter their cakes in the Cake Decorating Contest. This year’s theme is”FUN in the Snow!” Winners will be awarded Winter Carnival Game Tickets and announced over the PA system.
Cake decorating skill is NOT required for the contest–it’s a chance for kids to exercise creativity, and it’s so much fun to see what they come up with each year.
Please sign up today to make our Cake Walk a fabulous success!

Horn School will host its annual Winter Carnival and Silent Auction on Saturday, Feb 7th! The Horn classrooms transform into carnival games, the Art Room into a relaxing cafe, and the evening ends in a fun-filed auction/raffle where everyone has the chance to win parties with a special teacher. We need volunteers for helping with games, working in the Hornet cafe, baking cakes, and baking for Hornet Cafe. You can also sign up to request a buddy for your child (a Horn 5th-6th grade student that will chaperon your child) so they can experience the winter carnival while you help us out.

The Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) recently funded a field trip for our kindergarten through second grade students to see A Year With Frog and Toad at the Coralville Performing Arts Center (CCPA) this past Wednesday. The PTO paid for tickets and transportation to the event at an expense of $1500. You can view a few photos of the kids traveling and waiting for the show to start below.
Thank you parents for supporting our school to make enrichment opportunities like this available to our students!
