ICCSD Class Sizes and the ICCSD School Board

Dear Horn Parents -

We recently received the following email from the president of the Weber PTA.  Class sizes are such an important issue that impacts every student.  Even though the Tuesday ICCSD meeting has already happened, it is still not too late for board members to hear your stance on class sizes during budgeting decisions.

From Jamie Beedle-Vakiner, Weber PTO President:

“The ICCSD School Board will be discussing budget cuts this Tuesday night at their monthly meeting, scheduled for 6:00 PM.  The PTA would like to suggest that our Weber community contact the ICCSD school board members to let them know how much we value class size and hope that they will make decisions that keep our class sizes reasonable. Below are the email addresses for each board member.

Jeff.McGinness@iowacityschools.org 319-354-4914

Marla.Swesey@iowacityschools.org 319-338-2237

Reasonable class size (less than 24 for K – 2nd, under 28 for 3rd – 6th)  is the most important factor for our students and is crucial to student achievement.  The choice to reinstate funding for different programs that have already been cut or currently face cuts will likely lead to increased class sizes.  The loss of these programs will affect some students, but increased class sized will impact all students. Some of those programs facing cuts have people speaking for them, but there is no group advocating for keeping class sizes reasonable.  Please consider sending our school board members an email or giving them a call before Tuesday evening to express your concern about your child’s class size.

Please feel free to contact any of the PTA board members if you have questions or would like more information.

Thank you from the Weber PTA for your time and effort!
Jamie Beedle-Vakiner, PTA President

Horn Candace Carmichael Memorial Garden – Thank You Girl Scout Troop 8322

Candace_CarmichaelDid you notice the Horn lower level playground has a new garden? This memorial garden running parallel to the swings was prepared, planted and will be maintained by girl scout troop 8322.  The garden is in memory of Horn art teacher, Candace Carmichael who passed away of ovarian cancer in 2011. Mrs. Carmichael was an amazing art teacher who truly inspired students. She would bring in her ducks and rabbits for the students to paint and she would educate students on all of the different artists and have them make their own creations similar to the artists method. She was kind and caring and always there for everyone. The Horn community loved her and miss her dearly. Fun fact, Dan Peterson was her student too!

Below you will find photos of the garden being prepared and planted by our wonderful girl scouts. Read the rest of this entry »

Bike Rodeo Thursday (Weather Permitting!)

bike-rodeoJoin us at Horn School for our annual Bike Rodeo sponsored by our P.E. teacher, Mr. Hildebrand this Thursday, May 8th, from 5:30 – 7:00 pm.

What will happen if there is poor weather?

Unfortunately it looks like we might have severe storms on Thursday.  The call to keep or cancel the bike rodeo will happen at lunch time tomorrow, Thursday May 8th.  If canceled due to poor weather, the tentative back-up date for the Horn bike rodeo will be Wednesday, May 14th from 5:30 – 7 pm.

What is a bike rodeo?

Bike Rodeo is the term we use for a hands-on exercise using bikes and an obstacle course to teach kids the skills they need to safely stop and control their bikes.”
