Students can pick a band instrument to learn as early as 5th grade.  Instruments to choose from include: flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, bassoon, trumpet, French horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba and percussion. Our fifth and sixth grade band teacher is Mr. Lee Rabe. (Rabe.Lee@iccsd.k12.ia.us).

Individual or small group practices are available during the school day and whole band practices for West side elementary schools is after school (3:30-4:30) on Mondays for 5th and on Wednesdays for 6th grade. The bands perform two evenings (December and May) a year at West High auditorium.

Students can continue with their instrument in Junior High where there are opportunities to play in the Jazz Band and Rock Band and to try out to compete in All State. Marching Band begins in 9th grade.  Some students do learn both a band instrument and a string instrument. Both can be done, at least through 9th grade. Choir starts in 7th grade and also can be combined with band.
